Congratulations to Fran Smith, the winner of the lovely Star Blanket! And a BIG thank you to all those who bought tickets. We raised enough money to sustain the Storybook Project for the next year. Your support is truly appreciated by the women and all of the volunteers.
Another Star Blanket Raffle announcement will be coming soon!
Just wanted to alert everyone about 2 recently published articles. One is a short one from the Edmonton Journal describing the increase in numbers of women in federal prisons and the other is a very interesting essay discussing recent proposals to reform correctional services and their consequences for prisoners’ human rights.
Our recent fundraiser over the Mother’s Day weekend was a success. We raised $546.00 for our various projects and garnered some media attention too! Check out the Edmonton Sun article and the CTV news item (starts at about 14:09) covering the event. A big thank you to our volunteers and all those who stopped by to chat and donate to the EIFW library. And thanks to the weather for cooperating–especially on Saturday!
The minutes from our last meeting (Feb.24th) are here. Please let me know if anything needs to be changed or added.
“Life on the Instalment Plan” describes some of the failings of Corrections Canada and particular policies, and the mistreatment of prisoners like Renee Acoby. It also provides a good background on the establishment of regional prisons like EIFW and what goes on inside. The full article is here.
Greenwoods has generously donated 25 children’s books for our Storybook Project. Among these are hard cover picture books, board books, and classics–a really great selection. Thank you Greenwoods!
We also received donations of book card pockets in response to a request made on Jerome-L. Thank you to all of our Alberta colleagues for coming through! The card pockets were dropped off to Cathee along with spine labels and label protectors last week.
