I am a filmmaker from the Chicago area working on my MFA thesis documentary Without Charity, a film that focuses on Charity Payne, a young woman sentenced to 165 years in prison for her role in a Northern Indiana triple homicide.

This may be a student thesis film, but I want it to reach beyond the walls of a classroom. This is a film that talks about how a Charity re-enters society after being incarcerated for 7 years (after winning her appeal).

Hi:

I am a journalist and advocate for changes to our present justice system. For some time we have been working towards compensation for Native groups, agent orange injuries, autism, and attempting to get the government to allow youths with first time drug related crimes to consider more of a treatment centre rather than jail or pen. We are impressed with the concept of Buffalo Wellness House (for young men as well).

Also, is GELA the same concept as Buffalo Wellness House?

This was an amazingly powerful and emotional play. Having just been at the prison yesterday afternoon for the Storybook project with the women reading to their grandchildren, their daughters, their sons, and nieces and nephews…I was struck once again by the critical importance of the relationships of mother and child, mother and daughter, mother and grandchildren in the path of healing and rehabilitation. It would be incredible to see this play presented to the women at EIFW…
