Play examines cycles around incarcerated Aboriginal women

A Musta-Be: Maskihkiy Maskwa Iskwew , written by U of A professor Jane Heather, pulls from the experiences of Yvonne Johnson, who served time at the Edmonton Institution for Women after being convicted of murder.

The play  will be performed at the Second Playing Space in the U of A’s Timms Centre for the Arts for three performances – June 24, 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Book Club meeting

At the last committee meeting, we discussed having a Book Club Subcommittee (I suppose that would be a sub-Subcommittee..?).  I’d like to have a meeting within the next few weeks, but I recognize that October can be very busy.  Nevertheless, I’m going to throw out a few dates in October and a couple in November.  I was thinking of holding it at Remedy (close to the U of A and on a bus route) at 5:30 – does that work for everyone?

[FYI - The next book club meeting at the prison is on November 7th & the book is A Thousand Splendid Suns]

Here are a few dates:

(this Friday) October 16th

(next Friday) October 23rd

Tuesday, October 27

Monday, November 3rd

Thursday, November 5th

Looking for Sister Book Clubs

I came across the idea of ‘Sister Book Clubs’ on a blog a few weeks ago, and I think it would be a great idea for our prison book club.

Often, the women have requests for books that are either not available through the library or, if they are available, the wait is very long – sometimes up to four or five months. If you are part of a book club, or know someone who is in one, please consider passing along this idea. (….& feel free to pass along that we’ve discussed five books and have never had a problem getting one back.)

Again, if you or someone you know is interested, send me an email or call me.

Tanya

Book Club Schedule

Hey everybody,
Here’s a quick update for those of you who couldn’t make it to the meeting last week.

At the meeting, we decided that book club meetings would be held every three weeks. For now, the book club will be held on Saturdays in the EIFW chapel at one o’clock, and the group ranges from 9 – 13 people.

We decided at the meeting that Tara and Jocelyn would continue to reserve the book club kits from Strathcona Country Public Library, and that the book club meetings will be hosted
my more people from the committee. If you are interested in signing up (in pairs or on your own) to host one or more meetings, please see the following list.
Tara and Jocelyn still need to reserve the books, so the list may change. If you are interested in hosting any of these meetings, let me know. I’m out of this office this week so if you want to sign up, add a comment to this post.

Thanks,
Tanya

(FYI – For the first initial meeting, Laura and I went together and for the second meeting, I went on my own. The women said that they didn’t have preference for having one or two people, so it’s really up to your own comfort level if you want to go as pairs or individually. Also, this Saturday Moyra and I are doing A Complicated Kindess. )

JANUARY 30 – The Murder of Roger Ackroyd — Agatha Christie

Book Club – first meeting scheduled!

As some of you know, Kirsten, Laura and I went to the prison over lunch last week. We’ve set a date for the first book club meeting! It will be on Saturday, May 16th, at 10:00 am. This will be a very casual meeting so we can discuss what we want to do, how often we want to meet, etc.

Is anyone else interested in coming to the first meeting? Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Kathee (the new librarian) mentioned that the women would like to read an Oprah book of the month book – does anyone have any suggestions or favorites? (Tara and Jocelyn mentioned at our last meeting that the Strathcona County Library has book club packages. I think this is a great idea. What do you think?)

Feel free to call me or email me at work!

Tanya
